IEC Registration: How to Get an Import Export Code in India

Two colleagues reviewing import documentation on a laptop

The IEC is the first thing you need before importing anything commercially into India. The application takes an afternoon; the mistake that costs people months is forgetting the annual update.

The Importer Exporter Code is a ten-digit number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade. Without one you cannot file an import declaration or claim export benefits. It is the first registration to arrange, and it is genuinely straightforward.

Who needs one

Any business importing or exporting goods commercially. A few exemptions exist — imports for personal use, and certain government departments — but if goods are moving for your business, you need an IEC.

The code is linked to your PAN, so one entity holds exactly one IEC regardless of how many branches or product lines it has.

Documents you need

  • PAN of the entity (company, LLP, partnership or proprietor)
  • Proof of establishment — certificate of incorporation, partnership deed, or GST registration
  • Address proof for the registered premises — a utility bill, lease deed or sale deed
  • Bank details — a cancelled cheque or a banker's certificate in the prescribed format
  • Digital signature or Aadhaar of the authorised signatory, for e-signing the application

The application

  1. Create an account on the DGFT portal at dgft.gov.in.
  2. Select Apply for IEC and complete the ANF-2A form.
  3. Enter entity details exactly as they appear on the PAN — spelling variations cause rejections.
  4. Add the branch addresses you will import or export through.
  5. Upload the documents, pay the government fee, and sign with your DSC or Aadhaar OTP.

Approval is usually issued within a few working days, and the certificate is generated electronically. There is no physical document to wait for.

The part people forget

An IEC must be updated every year between April and June, even when nothing has changed. Codes that are not updated are deactivated automatically.

A deactivated IEC stops your filings dead — usually discovered when a consignment has already landed. The update itself takes minutes on the DGFT portal, so diarise it for April and treat it as routine housekeeping.

After you have the IEC

The IEC alone does not let you file. You still need:

  • ICEGATE registration linked to the IEC, with a Class 3 digital signature
  • Product approvals — BIS, FSSAI, WPC, EPR — depending on what you are importing
  • A customs broker, unless you intend to file declarations yourself

Getting all three arranged in parallel is what turns a first import from a three-month ordeal into a three-week one.
